For Chris Kovachik, owner of Spectrum
Airways Flight Training and Career College,
flight is a family matter. It began in 1964
when his grandfather started an airport on
the outskirts of Lake Ontario. Soon after,
the small strip of runway sprouted into an
aircraft maintenance facility before Chris’
father turned it into a flight school in 1982.
“It’s more of a family business – and that’s
how I got into it – just working around the
airport,” Kovachik said. “I’m an aircraft en-
gineer by trade and then got into the man-
agement of the aircraft maintenance facility
and the flight training unit, so that’s how the
whole thing started.”
“I’m a third-generation guy,” he continued.
“I’ve taken the reigns with the maintenance
and with the flying school. We’re more than
just a flying school; we do lots of aerial stuff
too – like aerial surveying and photography.”
