prompted numerous agencies to respond to
a scene where the extent of injuries was un-
certain. With so many agencies deployed to
that site, a call came in involving a young girl
injured in a car accident. She was located in
a community not even served by Sinor EMS,
but because they had a tenured paramedic at
a nearby station, they were able to dispatch
him to the emergency. The girl’s liver had
been lacerated during the car accident and
without quick treatment, she would have
most certainly died. Today, that young girl is
alive and well, attending college.
Red shares another story about an 8 year-
old boy who recently suffered from a seizure
spurred on by diabetes. The paramedic ar-
rived to find a frantic mother and child who,
he says, were scared to death. The transit
to the hospital was some 90 minutes away.
The paramedic, it turns out, also had dia-
betes and as a young child had experienced
the same physical symptoms. He calmly ex-
plained to the mother and her son what was
happening. He not only provided treatment,
but explained what would happen upon ar-
riving at the hospital and was able to help
them regain some sense of composure. As
Red says, “Emotional stress, in an emergency
situation, can exacerbate the physical stress.
It is important for a paramedic to take the
time and relate to the patient because it can
bring to a situation that is not so calm.”
Red says Sinor EMS staff is empowered
to not only provide life-saving medical treat-
ment, but also the emotional support the sit-
uation may require too. The drive to deliver
