as being one of the oldest fortification sites
in Canada, going all the way back to the War
of 1812.
According to Kearns, the project was a chal-
lenge, but that's exactly the type of work Ke-
arns Mancini love to seek out.
“I would say the types of projects we like are
quite challenging,” he said. “And the Fort
York Visitor Centre is a tremendous exam-
ple of a challenge to put the building where
almost no building could go. All of those
extreme limitations tend to produce a very
unique and outstanding solution which we
feel the visitor centre became.”
Along with Kearns Mancini's collaborative
approach to working with clients to gain in-
sight on project needs, the firm also works
closely with other architecture companies to
complete their work, such as Patkau Archi-
tects.
“It was a true collaboration between Patkau
and Kearns Mancini to design and produce
the building and to maintain all the appro-
priate communications with the city and
