Joines was among those who pledged sup-
port for the US Mayors Climate Protection
Agreement – a resolution to adopt the kind
of environmental practices advocated by the
Kyoto Protocol.
In the years that followed that resolution,
Winston-Salem has continuously changed
for the better in that respect. Air and water
quality improved, understanding of sustain-
ability practices increased, greener spaces
were grown, and sustainability-related jobs
were created. All this was accomplished in
collaboration between the City Council,
city staff, as well as the city’s residential and
business community.
A GREENER FUTURE
Since Winston-Salem’s centennial celebra-
tions in 2013, the city has continued tomake
environmental sustainability a top priority.
They have created a Sustainability Division
within the city, and have appointed a full-
time director to help guide the city’s devel-
opment.
The city has also continued to educate resi-
dents and business owners about their po-
tential for enacting positive change. In years
