The resort maintains a year-round staff of
100 employees and Pollard said the island’s
superior standard of living – it was ranked
No. 47 in per-capital gross domestic product
in 2013 by the International Monetary Fund
– is a contributor to the comfort level felt by
visitors.
Only the Bahamas (33) and Trinidad and
Tobago (40) ranked higher among Carib-
bean nations.
“Some islands, for whatever reason, do
better than others,” Pollard said, “and Barba-
dos is one of the islands where the standard
of living has been very good over many years.
The people in Barbados are well educated.
They’ve traveled. So because of those things,
there is better communication between the
people on the street, as well as the people that
work within the industry, with the guests.
“We have many guests who build rela-
tionships with staff members and commu-
nicate when they’re not here. That plays a
major part. And when people come back to
the hotel, it’s the same staff. We have a huge
number of our staff members who have been
here for at least 25 years. People see the same
people when they come back and they’re rec-
ognized. They also see the same guests.”
