being spoiled. A lot of the development has
been done in a Caribbean way, so it still has
that Caribbean character to it.”
The Southern Palms property consists of
92 rooms in six buildings across five acres,
each different in architecture. Some of them
were private houses and others were indi-
vidual beach apartments in years past. The
original owner purchased the building to the
far western end – a two-story private house
– then built two additional buildings as a
hotel in the 1950s.
Three more structures, including a one-
level villa, a three-story beach apartment
block and a modern condo building, were
added through 1960s and ’70s. The recep-
tion/lobby function was moved from the
property’s western end courtyard building to
a centrally located structure that went up in
1981.
Also added between the two easternmost
buildings on the property were a main pool
and the resort’s food and beverage opera-
tions.
“It’s a fairly sprawling property,” Pollard
said. “We have 1,000 feet of beach front-
