what can be achieved when great vision
is combined with innovation and commit-
ment to excellence.” Among the build-
ing’s attributes are a green roof, which re-
duces the heat island effect (that is, built
up areas that are hotter than nearby rural
ones) and mitigates storm water runoff; a
geothermal heating system, which saves
almost 500 metric tons of greenhouse gas
annually; low flow plumbing fixtures and
a rainwater collection system; and low “E”
glazed windows (“low emissivity” win-
dows emit low levels of radiant thermal
energy, which increases insulation while
maximizing the amount of natural light).
“This building, in its design, construction
and operation, highlights the city’s com-
mitment to environmental protection and
demonstrates that sustainability is at the
heart of what we do,” says Mayor Pender,
proudly.
