a collision; and i-ELOOP,
a first-of-its-kind braking
system which enables a
car’s own kinetic energy
to be captured by a ca-
pacitor and converted into
electricity whenever the
vehicle decelerates, thus helping to power
the car’s electrical components. The in-
novation helps improve on fuel economy
without compromising performance, es-
sentially allowing the car to generate elec-
tricity without having to burn extra fuel.
As Mazda’s North American Operations
President and CEO Jim O’Sullivan says,
“From an engineering standpoint, to have
the 2014 Mazda6 recognized by Popular
Science is a distinction that proves you
don’t need to be the most expensive ve-
hicle on the road to feature premium tech-
nology and advanced engineering.” To
that point, pricing on the Mazda6 begins
at under $21,000. Look for the launch of
SKYACTIVE-D (with 2.2 liter clean die-
sel engine) to debut sometime in spring
of 2014.
