ince the birth of the United States more than two centu-
ries ago, its seaports and navigation channels have served
as a vital economic lifeline by bringing goods and ser-
vices to people around the world and by delivering prosperity
to the nation. Seaports facilitate trade and commerce, create
jobs, help secure the nation’s borders and serve as stewards of
valuable coastal environmental resources.
