There’s a French proverb which affirms, “A summer’s sun is worth the having.”
Now, while we fully understand why some communities would prefer to see a little less sun in this season, with respect to this
new summer edition of Business World Magazine, we know readers will find it both illuminating and “worth the having” as it
provides insight on products, operational practices and services produced by an impressive array of entrepreneurs, public service
professionals and leaders of industry. In reflecting on this month’s coverage, I was reminded of perspective once posited by the
famed economist and author John Kenneth Galbraith who said that all great leaders have one characteristic in common – “the
willingness to confront unequivocally the major anxiety of their people in their time.” This, he said, was the essence of leader-
ship. And it certainly does seem so much of the energy exuded by leading enterprises really revolves around the incorporating
of practices which improve the quality of produced goods or services, in such a way, to make customers feel more confident, more
secure, and less anxious when it comes to sourcing those goods and services. The attributes that define exceptionality, therefore,
are more often evident in the way a business conducts its business as opposed to its external byproducts, for these, though essential,
are simply expressions of some greater thing.
As you read this month’s stories, consider the professional standards, values and customer-centric commitment compelling the
capabilities of each enterprise covered. It offers great insight as to how each company has been able to expand its operations, ex-
pand its market reach and flourish despite the peculiar, and precarious, nature of these economic times. For these organizations,
leadership has been wrought from their willingness to confront unequivocally the major anxiety of their customers, as well as
their workforce, by imparting solutions which make all feel more assured, secure, and less anxious. In this issue, you’ll find such
examples in the story of a Washington State car dealership not only recognized as a national leader in sales, but also one of the
best places to work; or in the story of two Atlanta men whose expertise in home renovation and architectural design services
attracts a national audience; or in the story of a Maine-based mobile health enterprise whose dedication to duty has not only
helped save lives, but also aids in advancing an initiative benefiting lives, for which, it may never come in direct contact. From
a leading manufacturer of machined parts based in Michigan to a Georgia technology company empowering its customers with
new degrees of application enablement; from a provider of eco-sensitive laundry services and a public transit service in Califor-
nia’s Gold Coast to the work of public service leaders engaged in the enhancing of life as well as economies in Alaska, Ohio, Texas
and Canada – these leaders lead in examples from which all can learn.
And of course, we remain grateful to the advertisers who support our mission to share these examples and enhance our capacity to
continue as a leading online resource of business news and information in all corridors of industry. We look forward to returning
next month when the summer sun will still be worth the having, and maybe... a little less hot.
