“Everybody comes here to work and they
want to help people. That is why they stay.”
The organization also looks for those who
share the same core values on which Bon
Secours operates. “We have eight values
that we try to practice every day,” explained
Szumski. Those eight values include Re-
spect, Justice, Integrity, Stewardship, Com-
passion, Quality, Growth, and Innovation.
ASSISTED LIVING
Today, people want their money to stretch
even further, and they are now opting for
studios and single rooms instead of full-
sized apartments, according to Szumski.
Consequently, Bon Secours Place recently
converted a section of the facility into small-
er, more affordable studios. “They want to
be here, but they don’t want to pay for space
they don’t really need. Like most industries,
we have to listen to the customer and adapt
to their needs. I think that it’s very exciting
to offer new services.”
Looking ahead to the longer term, Szum-
ski said Bon Secours Place will continue to
offer the same high quality care to residents,
but will look a “little different.” Changes
have to occur to keep the facility modern
and cost-effective. “I think we’re going to
look more and more like skilled nursing
centers in the future, which will demand
increased staffing and regulatory oversight.
It is important for the assisted living facility
not to lose the home-like qualities that set us
apart from skilled nursing.”
Szumski also envisions some specializa-
tion taking place in assisted living which
could include respiratory and cardiac care
or diabetes management. Now and in the
future, however, Bon Secours Place will
continue to carry out its mission to be Good
Help®.
