But be sure, as Drescher says, community
residents are not just passive receivers of ser-
vice, this is a community that is very engaged
beyond their base of residence. Many resi-
dents routinely volunteer tutoring and men-
toring services at local schools. For a commu-
nity that was historically inspired by a group
of volunteers, the spirit of volunteerism per-
meates throughout the property as Drescher
says some 580 volunteers annually dedicate
34,000 hours of service to helping residents
and the community, whether that is by pro-
viding shopping, transportation to appoint-
ments, home maintenance, meal programs
or some other kind of service.
