Hong Kong is one of two a special administrative regions of the People’s Republic of China, with the other being Macau. It is located on the country’s south coast. Visually, Hong Kong is renowned for its expansive skyline and deep natural harbour. Politically, it is known for operating under a capitalist economic system independent of mainland China and is recognized as one of the chief financial centres of the East, as well as an important international destination for business.
Venues and conventions
Numerous functions are held in Hong Kong every year, including exhibitions, conventions and banquets. The Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) and the AsiaWorld-Expo are two of the major convention and exhibition venues in Hong Kong.
The HKCEC hosts more than 45 international trade fairs for buyers from more than 100 countries each year, including the world’s largest leather fair, and the world’s largest watch and clock fair. AsiaWorld-Expo includes the AsiaWorld-Arena, the biggest indoor-seated entertainment arena in Hong Kong, as well as AsiaWorld-Summit, Honk Kong’s largest indoor conference and banquet venue, which seats up to 5,000 people.
Climate
Weather in Hong Kong is often sunny, but can be unpredictable. The region has a sub-tropical climate, but despite that, the city does have four distinct seasons. Fall is considered the best time to visit, as the weather is the most predictable – humidity is low and the skies are bright. Winter weather is cooler, but still mild. It never snows in Hong Kong. Spring weather can bring warm days, but can also bring heavy rainfall. Humidity increases as the season goes on. Summers in Hong Kong are famous for thick humidity, and the risk of thunderstorms and even typhoons.
Where to stay
Hong Kong has many premiere hotels from which to choose, the Peninsula Hong Kong being one of the most noteworthy. The Peninsula was founded in 1928 to be, in the words of its founder, “the finest hotel east of Suez.” It has nine restaurants and lounges, including some of the most respected dining institutions in the city. The Peninsula offers a service wherein travellers can be greeted at the airport by one of the hotel’s Rolls-Royce Phantoms, and if that’s not fancy enough, the hotel’s helicopter can transport you from the airport to the hotel roof in 20 minutes.
Alternatively, the Landmark Mandarin Oriental – located in the premier business and fashion district of the city – is known for offering exceptional quality in a more boutique-like setting. The suites in the Landmark are some of the largest in Hong Kong, and the Oriental Spa at the hotel is consistently rated as of Asia’s best.
