Located along the scenic, southern shore of Conception Bay on the Avalon Peninsula of the island of New Foundland (a mere 20 kilometers from the Provincial Capital city of St. John’s) Conception Bay South has shined in its efforts to live-up to the community’s familiar motto  – “Bright Town, Bright Future.” Of course, through tirelessly working toward the realization of goals involving economic development and sustainability, many have discovered that a brighter quality of life awaits here and now in Conception Bay South. Residential population has steadily increased through recent years, and an increasing number of entrepreneur striving for a bright business future have been attracted to opportunities in this area. As Mayor of Conception Bay South, Woodrow French explains, “We are a vibrant community which is growing leaps and bounds.  We realize that there is a need to sustain our community and provide its people with the amenities they need to have a bright future here at Conception Bay South.”

Sustainability Projects

In order to work towards a more sustainable environment and accommodate growth, the town recently adopted the Conception Bay South Municipal Plan for 2011 to 2021.This plan layouts the path that will guide growth of the town using principles of sustainability; factors that focus on protection of the shoreline, greater reduction in carbon emissions and connectivity through initiatives that compel walkability, and much more in the way of placing greater emphasis on environmental stewardship. The Town has adopted a Climate Change Mitigation Plan which includes advancing the construction of community gardens and promoting carpooling in order to reduce carbon emissions from cars.

Other initiatives in place include development of the T’Railway which runs through the town and provides residents with beautiful linear trail, rich with trees and scenic views. The presence of the T’Railway also encourages people to walk or cycle rather than use cars. Another functionality of it is connecting people to retail areas in town.

Attracting Businesses

Besides sustainability, Conception Bay South has also invested into the economic development of the town through the construction of The Gateway. The Gateway is a 100 acre development which is being marketed to attract new businesses. The Gateway is also the site of the Town’s new stadium which is under construction.   As Mayor French points out, “You have to meet the needs of businesses as best as you can to get companies to invest in our town.” Therefore along with the Gateway, the town alsoprovides tax incentives to help startups or expanding businesses in the area. The Conception Bay South industrial park on Fowlers Road is yet another project where serviced land is ready to be sold to businesses, with high demand for the initial phases.

Lastly, Mayor French is also quick to give credit to the council and staff supporting these initiatives and coming up with innovative ways to increase sustainability and development of Conception Bay South. The proximity of the town with the capital has also proved advantageous in increasing population growth along with efficient transportation networks and the allure of good weather. Mayor French goes on to conclude, “Here at Conception Bay South, we are a forward looking community committed to sustainability and helping our residents with improvement in amenities.”
